BCC 4SS LEGENDS OF CHESS: GM BENT LARSEN

Grandmaster Bent Larsen (1935-2010): his style was his own, imaginative, challenging. He was 6 times Danish Champion and candidate for the World Chess Championship on 4 occasions. He had won games against Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky and Fischer. Indeed, his chess is inspiring. Going over Larsen's games gives us motivation to try our own unique style, offer up our own outrageous attack, break out of the ordinary, the standard play. Chess is a serious sport, yet it should also be fun and creatively satisfying. So, taking the example of Larsen, come to the BCC "Legends of Chess" 4SS this Saturday, January 19th, and try out your own challenging moves; bring your imagination, cunning, wit and of course, endgame technique.  This is your chance to produce a brilliant game.

CHESS FEVER CATCHES ON AT SOUTH STATION

The rank and file public which walks through South Station is now taking notice of a square of tables set in blue cloth. Many are staring, some asking questions, and others actually sitting down in front of the chess sets everywhere to be found. 

It can be scary playing against a US Chess Champion  

and grandmaster, yet there are those who are actually brave enough to give it a try.

Nathan Smolensky, President of the Boylston Chess Club is on target (see post below).  The event of the evening will  be tomorrow, Tuesday, at South Station.  Just look at the photos below and see what richness there was at the last  GM Larry C simul of 2012.

The table was packed solid. And the crowd loved it!

So come to beautiful South Station (5:00PM to 7:00PM) to play chess, observe the games, people watch, and just soak in

Christiansen Simul Tomorrow!

As the second Tuesday of the month approaches, so too does another opportunity to face local legend GM Larry Christiansen in South Station.

The event will run from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M., tomorrow (Tuesday, January 8th), at Boston's famous South Station. Players are welcome to start games until 6:15. As always, this event is free to join, and requires no prior reservation. Winners will receive a free entry to a Boylston event.

So test your might this Tuesday night!

BCC QUADS BRING EXCITING CHESS

The BCC QUADS brought on some exciting games and results. In the "master" QUAD, NM Mika Brattain and NM Eric Godin shared first place with 2 points.

Ross Eldridge (upper right, green top) went clear first in QUAD 2. Siddharth Arun (facing Ross, with a drawn game) was 2nd with 2 points.

Nithin Kavi was clear 1st with 2.5 points in QUAD 3.

Mark Fins, (playing Conway Xu above), was clear 2nd with 2 points in QUAD 3.

Mike Griffin vs Bernardo Iglesias (draw!) shared 1-2nd place in

a 3 round swiss with 6 players.

Nicholas Lesieur (right) playing white vs George Norman in Round 2, 

came in clear 3rd in the swiss event.

NEW YEARS DAY: HERB HEALY WRAP UP

Boylston Chess Club Champion, NM Lawyer Times took clear first with a perfect 4-0, in Herb Healy Rated Open Section. NM Denys Shmelov, BCC Blitz Champion was 2-3rd along with NM Farzad Abdi, who hit a new high of master rating 2212. Congratulations Farzad!

There were 32 players in the Rated Open Section.

The Herb Healy Non-Rated Open Section found IM Jonathan Yedidia and NM Alex Cherniack sharing first place 3.5 points. And NM Charles Riordan, NM Mika Brattain and Robert Huntington were 3-5th with each with 2.5 points.

The BCC extends a Happy New Year to all chess players in New England and around the world. Happy 2013!

BCC QUADS: ROUND ROBIN CHESS TOURNEY

BCC Quads, this Saturday. It is a 3 round event, with a time control of G/60 +5 sec delay.

OK sounds good, yes? But why should you play in a quad?  Well, there are at least two good reasons: 1. you are paired with players your own strength, and rating range; and 2. you play everyone in your section. Yes, an "all-play-all" round robin. You know who you are going to play and with what color from the beginning of the event. Here is your chance to plan your tournament strategy accurately, and push hard for the win. Also, the prize fund can be worth your while, too! And the last round is scheduled for 3:00 PM. Thus this event is over by 5:00 PM. So you still have time and energy to do something else fun Saturday evening. From a chess point of view, for you to play 3 games which demand focus and creativity is quite enough chess in one afternoon. If you have a chance to win your quad by Round 3, you will still have energy and stamina to do so.  All in all, it makes good sense to play in the BCC QUADS.

So, bring your enthusiasm, your chess fingers and your pen to the BCC QUADS, this Saturday.  This event is especially recommended for children who are just learning to play.

Annual Open House  2013

Herb Healy Memorial

About 45 chess players celebrated the new chess year at the Boylston's annual Herb Healy Memorial tournament and open house. At least a dozen more visited with friends, watched some games, and had a bite for lunch.

Bernardo and Nathan did the TD duties and Mike Griffin arranged for the food (i.e., purchase, setup, cooking, and cleanup).  Thanks also to Ken Ho, Amrit Gupta, and Dave Glickman who helped in various ways.
