(I played a number of off-hand skittles games with Joy.

She won a well-thought-out endgame and giggled

her way into my heart!  Skipping rope in the hall, to 

keep the blood flowing, between rounds, Joy is

truly a pleasure to have at the Club. She is

poised at the chess board, always polite, and

speaks like she is a Harvard graduate. Yet

she is just 7 yrs old. Her smile is disarming!)

Herb Healy Open House, 2014

More than fifty chess players welcomed the new year at the annual Boylston Chess Club open house and tournament, as they have since the 1960's.  This event became known as the Herb Healy officially in 1974.

47 players competed in the rated and unrated events, while many more came by to see old friends.

FM Chris Chase and NM Farzad Abdi tied in the rated section (n=25) with 3.5.
NM (and Boylston Champion) Charles Riordan, NM Chris Williams, NM Carey Theil, William Collins, and Mateos Sahakian followed, all with 3.0.

The non-rated section was won by NM Mika Brattain with 4 points.  LM Alex Cherniack and Robert Huntington were second with 3 points.

Bernardo Iglesias was, as usual, the excellent TD.   Robert Oresick and Doc Kinne assisted in entries.  Mike Griffith organized the lunch.  (Earlier in the week, Carey Theil, Bernardo Iglesias, Chris Chase, and Robert Oresick cleaned the club in preparation for the tournament.)

player in the world, at 91, is simply remarkable.

GRAND PRIX ROUND UP FOR THE YEAR

NM Eric Godin takes the pot of gold

with a 28.5 point yearly total 

to capture the GP U2400 category prize.

Jesse Nicholas won the GP U2200 category

prize for a year's total of 20 points.

Carissa Yip took home the GP U2000 category prize

with 18.5 points. Nithin Cavi was 2nd with 18 points.

David Martin took home the GP U1800 category prize with

a yearly total of 19.5.

Daniel Wang emassed a yearly total of

16.5 points to take home the GP U1600

prize. Steve Stepak was 2nd with 16 points.

Sandeep Shankar took the GP U1400 catetory prize,

with a yearly total of 13.5.

Tony DiNosse made a yearly total of 12 points

to win the GP U1200 category prize.

TD Bernardo Iglesias makes it look easy

as World Chess Champion Magnus Carlson look on.

Bernardo is the backbone of Saturday chess.

He is polite, efficient, kind, diplomatic
