SAINT LOUIS, MO.- The World Chess Hall of Fame debuted an exhibition of paintings, Tom Hackney: Corresponding Squares: Painting the Chess Games of Marcel Duchamp, on May 19.


 ... Hackney’s paintings, all made on linen, are geometric abstractions based on the movement of chess pieces in games played by the celebrated French artist and chess player, Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), from the early 1920s through the 1960s. Duchamp once said that playing a game of chess was like making a drawing: “The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts, and these thoughts, although making a visual design on the chessboard, express their beauty abstractly, like a poem.” ...

Blitz tiebreak games from Girls' Championship

The Massachusetts Girls' Championship, held at the Boylston Chess Club on May 1st, came down to a blitz tiebreaker between Joy Cao and Sandra Shur.  Joy and Sandra both finished with 3/4 after the "regulation" games and it came down to a two blitz games at a time control of G/5 + 2s.

The Boylston Chess Club Needs Your Help

We urgently need more tournament directors to keep offering a wide variety of tournaments each month.

Please consider becoming a certified USCF tournament director (TD), if only to act as an assistant TD from time to time.

The certification process is extremely straightforward: 

1)  Read the USCF rulebook ("USCF Official Rules of Chess), available at the club or online, e.g., on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/United-States-Chess-Federations-Official/dp/0375724001/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437142481&sr=8-1&keywords=rules+of+chess).

2) Fill out and return the following form to the USCF:

Players, please consider helping out as a TD from occasionally to keep the tournaments we all enjoy running smoothly.  Parents, perhaps you can help direct while your child plays.
