U1800 SECTION

 

Steve Stepak scored 3 points to capture 1st place

in the U1800 section of the Game 80.

Two wins from complex endgame play highlight the

value of an extra 20 minutes per side over Game 60

usually played in Saturday events. It is always

rewarding to have enough time to essay a win 

from a well-configured endgame set up.

Steve was +71 for a 1584 rating.

Description	The games of the great positional giants of chess - like Karpov, Kramnik, and Carlsen - show them consistently using little tactics and concrete calculation to advance their positional goals. GM Sam Shankland will address this topic in detail, showing examples of cases where one needs a high level of tactical awareness as well as precise calculation to make comparatively modest gains. And Sam’s DVD set “The Shankland Method” will be available for sale at a discount! GM Sam Shankland is a two-time Olympiad Gold Medalist (2014 and 2016), a former World Under 18 co-champion (2008), and winner of several high-level international events. He has worked as an analyst for the reigning World Champion, Magnus Carlsen, training with him to prepare for the 2014 and 2016 World Championship matches. A buffet dinner will be provided for all attendees.

The 2017 Massachusetts Girls Championship will take place on May 7, 2017 at the Boylston Chess Club in Cambridge. There will be two sections: Open and U1000.  

Trophies will be awarded to top 3 in each section, and top U600 and Unrated finiahers in the U1000 section. Medals will be awarded to players scoring 3+ points and not winning a trophy. The Open section winner will be MA representative at the 2017 National Girls Tournament of Champions.

International Master John Bartholomew

takes on all-comers in "The Pit" Harvard Square's

current center for casual chess.

IM John Bartholomew: FIDE 2455; USCF HIGHEST 

RATING ATTAINED: 2555; from Minneapolis, MN,

with a 67 percent score, overall.

John is a congenial, generous person who offered

to play all-comers, free. He is a popular figure on

the Internet with his youtube instructional

chess videos.  Bravo, John! Great show!

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY

The local chess community is anticipating the completion

of the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Campus Center

(former Holyoke Center) Harvard University's 

administrative building, in 18 months, which suggests

that, given the normal construction delays, we will not 

be seeing summer chess in this location until 2020.

The building will include a cafe with chess activity

inside as well as an outdoor plaza with chess

and games tables  provided for general public usage.

[I handed out lots of business cards to alert

the crowd that the BCC is one of the top

chess clubs in the USA and is just

up the street from Harvard Square!]
