About the Instructor
Cuban-American Grandmaster Fidel Corrales Jimenez was born in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba. His father taught him to play chess at the age of six, and he began playing at a professional level only a few years later. As a child, he won multiple Cuban National Championships: Under 12 and Under 14. At 18 years old, he was the highest ranked Junior in the country, and represented Cuba in two World Junior Championships. Fidel became a GM in 2008, and his peak FIDE rating is 2617. He was a member of the Cuban Olympic Team, playing alongside Leinier Dominguez, Lazaro Bruzon and Yuniesky Quesda, thus making the strongest team in the history of the country. He also participated in two World Cups. Among his many international events throughout the world, his best tournament results are: Champion of The Continental of America (2009), Champion of the Catalan Circuit (2008), Champion of the Philadelphia Open 2013, and Champion of the Cleveland Open (2018). His best victories include, but are not limited to, Wesley So, Arkadij Naiditsch, and Vasif Durarbaily. He maintains an active professional competition schedule, and is an official coach for chess.com, where he helps many students achieve their goals. On a daily basis, he provides live commentary on his personal Twitch channel, and often plays blitz online. In addition to his very full schedule as a chess player and coach, Fidel also works as a computer programmer for the leading specialty contractor corporation in North America, where he creates and maintains iOS Applications. Fidel currently resides in Pelham, New York with his wife and children.
