Anthony Miles - Alexander Beliavsky [E12]
Tilburg 42/681 Tilburg 42/681, 1986
The late English Grandmaster Tony Miles was not just a fine chess player, but also a striking personality. His wit, eccentricities and creative style made him popular with the public. His untimely death in 2001 shocked the chess world.
He frequently played in the US, including various Lone
Pine tournaments, New York Opens, World Opens and even the US Closed
Championship when he temporarily gave up the UK flag for the US flag.
One
Tony's most brilliant efforts came in the followinng stunner against
his old rival Alexander Beliavsky from Tilburg 1986. This game was
awarded the Chess Informant "Novelty of the Year" prize for the
brilliant sacrifice 18 f4!! which offered a piece to arouse White's
foot soldiers into deadly action.
