2007 BCC Championship after Week 2

In past years, it may have been the case that Masters in the BCC Championship looked upon their games with Reubens-Landey qualifiers as breathers from the week after week intensity of Master vs. Master competition. However, if two weeks make a trend, then this is unlikely to be the case in 2007. Greg Kaden, the winner of this year's qualifier and the lowest rated player in the Championship, remains undefeated after scoring a week 2 victory over FM Paul MacIntyre. Do we have a Cinderella story brewing?

2007 Hauptturnier after Week 2

Carey Theil has joined the junior circuit, making it a 12-player field. For those who like fighting (or perhaps more accurately, decisive) chess, we can report that so far there have been no drawn games in the Hauptturnier.

Alan Price had won his first three games, but lost to Greg in round 4.



In the fifth and final round, Greg Kaden then defeated Carey Theil to clinch first place with 4 1/2 points. So, Greg will play in the 2007 Boylston Championship.

Alan Price drew with Simon Warfield to finish with 3 1/2 and a share of second.

Farzad Abdi beat Andrew Wang to get his 3 1/2 points and half of second.

Farzad and Alan may be invited to play in the championship, contingent on the field of club masters who want to play this year. Bernardo Iglesias will make the final determination.

Reubens Landey update

Greg Kaden (3.5) edged past Alan Price (3) by defeating him on Monday.

Carey Theil (3) moved into contention with a win over Andrew Wang (2.0).

Simon Warfield (2.5) beat Ken Newman ( 2.0) and Farzad Abdi (2.5) took out Walter Driscoll (1.0).
Jason Rihel (2.0) drew with Alex Slive (2.0).
Alexander Paphitis (2.0) won over Frank Frazier.
Natasha Christiansen (1.0) had to take a zero point bye, as did Philip Nutzman ( 1.0).
David Glickman (1.5) went bye-bye (round 4 bye and round 5 bye).

Reubens Landey 2007 round 3

After three (of five) rounds, Alan Price (3) has slipped ahead of the pack in the Reubens Landey. An astonishing 5 players took byes for this round, including Greg Kaden (2.5), so his match with Alan is put off to round 4. Carey Theil (2) defeated Alexander Paphitis (1) and will face 12 year old Andrew Wang (2) next week. Andrew beat Walter Driscoll (1). Jason Rihel (1.5) will face Alex Slive (1.5) who got a fish egg from Frank Frazier (0.5) for his own collection of chess caviar. Farzad Abdi (1.5) had to accept a draw with Simon Warfield (1.5), who will face the hopefully healthier Ken Newman (2). Philip Nutzman (1) will take on Walter, and Natasha Christiansen (1) will play Alexander.

The winner or winners will be invited into the BCC championship, in which 9 or 10 club masters play a round-robin for honor, $300, and free entry to a year's worth of BCC tournaments.

2nd stage of Championship begins July 9th

Congratulations to the 2007 BCC Weaver Adams U1800 Champion Alexander Paphitis. The final crosstable is now available. As the winner of the event, Alex has qualified to play in the Reubens/Landey U2200 Championship.

Speaking of which ... the Reubens/Landey begins on Monday, July 9th and is open to all BCF members with ratings between 1800-2199. Top scorers have the opportunity to secure a place in this fall's BCC Championship.

It's Championship Season Again

The previous Boylston Chess Club Championship finished up last November, and already it's time to start again. The BCC Championship cycle comprises four separate events starting in June of each year.

First up is the Weaver Adams Under 1800 Championship. This four round swiss is open to all BCF members with ratings under 1800.

The top finisher in the Weaver Adams qualifies for the Reubens/Landey Under 2200 Championship -- a five round swiss beginning in July. Other than the qualifier, members must be rated between 1800-2199 to participate.

A nice run in the Reubens/Landey might qualify you to play in the BCC Championship. This round robin tournament, starting in September, is open to all BCF members who have achieved Master's ratings. Concurrent with the Championship is the Hauptturnier, a round robin for the top players who do not qualify for the senior circuit.

Everything kicks off on Monday with the first round of the Weaver Adams, so if you're rated under 1800, it's time to get on board. If you are not currently a member of the BCF, don't fret. You can join at the site.
