ADULT EDUCATION
Post-mortem at the Boylston Chess Club.
PARENTS MAKE IT ALL POSSIBLE
Suraj's mom and Bernie Xu's mom talk about stuff.
This photo highlights the fact that it is the parents of these
scholastic stars who do a lot of work to get their kids ready
for tournaments, feed them, console them, delight in their
accomplishments, and are patient enough to sit and wait for
their sweet children to finish their tournament games.
Without the parents, there would be no children at the BCC.
And without the children, there would be no future for the BCC.
So a special "thank you" to all the parents who take the
time to care for their kids and help them further their
tournament chess careers.  Bravo dads!  Brava moms!
And 3 cheers to the grandparents too!
A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE
Dr. Chase Yarbrough, MD is a pediatric resident
at Boston Children's Hospital. He learned chess
in medical school and has played 2 tournaments
at the BCC. Bravo, Chase!
CHESS: A CATALYST FOR CREATIVITY
BCC Regular, Ed Chiu contemplates his position
during a tournament game.
A FITTING GESTURE OF APPRECIATION
I am sure that if Harry Lyman could see my photo essay promoting his tournament,
he would be pleased to note the participation of people of all ages, the
accomplishments of the scholastic stars and the contribution that girls and women
bring forth in making the game of chess a truly remarkable activity on an intellectual,
social and sporting level. The Boylston Chess Club is facing challenging times.
Due to plans to renovate the 140 Elm Street Building which is our place now, we will
be obliged to pack up and move. To where? We have yet to find a place which we
can afford which accommodates our needs: clean, well-lit, well-heated, secure, quiet . . .
The Harry Lyman Memorial will be the last major fund-raising
event of the 2014 season. It is my hope to see a big crowd to
celebrate the memory and legacy of Harry Lyman.
It would be a smashing success if we could have 55+1 players.
We did have 55 players for the Tony Miles Memorial 2014.
My "pitch" for this event:
Come over to the BCC and become part of chess history!
I will be on-site, with camera in hand ready to take photos
of this event for the BCC archives and the annals of chess
in Massachusetts and New England, and for souvenirs for
the players and observers of this event.
My apologies to anyone who has been a contributing member or
friend of the Boylston Chess Club over the years whose photo or
name I did not include in this promo. The BCC is the sum total of all
those who take the time to help out in various ways throughout the
years and decades.  Without the efforts of all our members and
friends, patrons and benefactors, we could not feature the successes
that the photos in this essay portray.  I can only say: "Thank
you for your efforts, one and all." And for those out there
who read this blog post who wish to know what they can do
to help out, I say: "Come on over and play in the Harry Lyman
Memorial."  You don't have to be a great chess players. You may
be rusty. No matter. Just come and participate in this most
important event. If the future of the BCC is unclear, at least
we can make our last big event of 2014 a resounding success.
