DescriptionThe tournament will run for four weeks on lichess each Thursday at 6:30 PM. However, if two players need to reschedule a game, PROVIDED that they notify me in advance of Thursday, they may choose a time of their own agreement.

Pairings will be posted just after 6 PM on the Boylston CC website. The cutoff time for registration in time to play a Round is 6 PM. Any players who register subsequent to 6 PM will be skipped until the following week's Round.

Rating with USCF will be delayed by 72 hours after the completion of the tournament to give lichess time to ensure Fair Play was observed in all games.

Players must join Zoom during the event.

Must register and pay online in advance by 9:30am on October 3, and must agree to COVID safety requirements (to be provided to registrants by e-mail). COVID safety requirements include complying with MA travel restrictions, wearing a mask indoors at all times, and maintaining a distance of 6 feet from other players and directors to the maximum extent possible. Players should bring own water and/or coffee, as none will be available onsite.

 born:  Riverside, California, United States
achieved title of:  Grandmaster (1977)
 FIDE rating:  2567  (April 2020)

Larry M. Christiansen (born June 27, 1956) is an American chess player of Danish ancestry.

He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 1977.

Christiansen was the 
U.S. champion three times -
in 1980, 1983, and 2002.


He competed in the FIDE World Championship in 1998 and 2002, and in the FIDE World Cup in 2013.

Christiansen grew up in Riverside, California, United States. In 1971, he became the first junior high school student to win the National High School Championship. He went on to win three invitational U.S. Junior Championships in 1973, 1974, and 1975.

In 1977, at age 21, he became a grandmaster without first having been an international master.

Christiansen tied for first place with Anatoly Karpov at Linares 1981. He won the 2001 Canadian Open Chess Championship. He also won Curaçao 2008[1] and the Bermuda Open 2011.[2]

Christiansen played on the United States teams in the Chess Olympiad in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1996 and 2002. He won the team silver medal in 1990 and the team bronze in 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1996.[3]

Christiansen describes his playing style as "aggressive-tactical" and he lists his favorite opening as the Sämisch King's Indian.

DescriptionFeel like you know the Opening Principles but rarely develop a plan in the Middlegame? When your opponent deviates from the Main Line, do you break into a cold sweat? Do you spend hours on tactics puzzles only to find that the quiet moves are killing you?

This is the class for you! NM Andrew Hoy and Class-A club player John Hardin are offering a brand-new, six week course on Understanding the Openings.

Each week, we will take an intensive look at one particular opening, focusing on

Typical Pawn Structures
Major Plans
Routine Tactics & Traps
Famous Games

After an hour of lecture, all students in the class will be invited to a private thematic tournament hosted on LiChess dedicated to exploring that week’s opening in a series of contests. John and Andrew will participate and add commentary to the tournament games, so every student gets a chance to gain both individual feedback and experience from their play.

The official class will run for two hours, but students are welcome to continue playing and exploring the opening together as long as they wish.

Classes are scheduled for Friday evenings, 7-9pm EDT. The current schedule is as follows:

Friday, September 18th -- Queen’s Gambit Declined

Friday, September 25th -- Caro Kann, Slav, Scandinavian

Friday, October 2nd -- King’s Indian Defense

Friday, October 9th -- Ruy Lopez

Friday, October 16th -- French Defense

Friday, October 23rd -- Sicilian Defense

Registration will be capped at 16 students per class.

  • The annual club championships will be held online on lichess on Monday nights in September.            
  • Players must join a video call.
  • The four leaders in each section at the end of the 4 rounds will be invited to an OTB event for final places.
  • Online portion is not rated.
  • Pairings will be emailed to players on Monday afternoon.
  • Please register with your lichess username in the comments section.


The top four overall players and the top four players rated U1800 will be invited to play in the 4 person OTB playoffs for the championship title.  

A link to join the video call will be provided to registered players on Monday.
