AMUSEMENT AND BITTER DISAPPOINTMENT

1.c4 Nf6: English Opening
Terrence Fricker deciding on his play vs Steve Stepak.
(comments by Steve Stepak) I have rarely played against
the English. So what to do: stear things to a King's Indian.
I did this with lots of mistakes, and to my view, got
a lost game out of the opening. The game was interesting.
I was being chopped to pieces, but all of a sudden I picked up
my knight from h5: "where to put it" f6: ooh! losing!
The right piece to the wrong square, violating my motto:
always go forward. If I had put the knight on g3 I would have been
threatening a forced mate in 1 or 2; all Terrence could hope for
was perpetual check. But it was not meant to be!
Bitter disappointment. The spectators even pointed to the "g3" square
shaking their heads. My heart sank. I never felt so wounded.
At the same time, (I rationalized) I couldn't have lost to a
nicer guy. Bravo, Terrence who scored 3 points to tie for 1-3rd
place in the U1950 section with Ames Abbot and David Martin.
Ames Abbot, here playing black vs Michael Yu scored 3 points
to share 1-3rd place with Terrence Fricker and David Martin.

with Walter Driscoll and Sandeep Shankar.

Round 1. Walter scored 2.5 points to
share 4-6th place with Shankar and Fins.
Wisdom broke even with 2 for 4.
