2 CHILD CHESS STARS MEET
Ilya Orsher revisits the BCC to face off with Joe Perl.
Ilya took both games and secured 2nd place in the event.
Orsher's last tournament was in 2001! Ilya began his tournament
chess career in the USA in 1999, having emigrated from the
USSR when he was 9 yrs old.  He is now a world traveler, often in
India. Ilya is back in the Boston area to visit his grandmother in
Lynn . Welcome back Ilya!
Dan Aldrich, law student from Washington, D.C., working an
internship in Boston for the summer, plays black vs
MIT Sloan School graduate Bryants Vernon. This is
Dan's first trip to the BCC Cambridge, but I suspect it
won't be his last. Welcome Dan ! Bryants has already
played several events at the BCC and hopes to train hard
to get his rating over 2200!  Good luck, Bryants!
Ichun Chen, from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, playing his first chess
tournament of his life at the BCC. Ichun is in Cambridge studying
English. [Ichun and I play lots of chess at the chess tables of Au
Bon Pain, Harvard Square, going over chess theory and
tactical nuances.] Ichun was also kind enough to take my
photo playing this event. Welcome Ichun!
Here Ichun is playing black vs Jens Kipper.

Steve Stepak, gesturing to Ichun Chen on the fine points
of chess photography (focus!), readies to play Ilya Orsher,
who is waiting patiently for the match to begin.
[I met Ilya in 1999 when he first arrives in the US
from the USSR; I took many photos of this child
prodigy. Unfortunately, none survived life's ups and
downs.  Luckily, I had my camera for this blitz event
at the BCC; honored to be photographed playing Ilya
who is not only a great chess player but also a
gentleman.  Welcome to the BCC 2015, Ilya!

Wow! Ilya Orsher - a name from the past. And the subject of one of my favorite early photos. Taken at South Station 2000.
